start exploring

Earthworm

Earthworms are born fully formed except for their romantic structure, which develops 60–90 days later.

Garden earthworms survive one to two years, but wild ones might live eight years.

Green Anole

These little lizards are easy to care for and inexpensive.

Male anoles are territorial lizards. Socialization requires consistent handling.

Guinea Pig

Despite their name, guinea pigs are rodents, not pigs. Before being pets, they were livestock.

Guinea pigs thrive in confinement and can live up to eight years.

Hedgehog

These adorable insect-eating creatures thrive in captivity and are friendly when touched daily.

Hedgehogs huddle up with their spiny quills facing out when threatened. They are noisy nocturnal critters best suited for pet owners who don't sleep well.

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Flowers, tree sap, and insects feed the ruby-throated hummingbird. These thimble-sized nests are 10–40 feet above the earth!

Females incubate one to three eggs for 12 to 14 days and nest for 18 to 22 days.
